FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have stepped into a mounting administrative crisis in West Africa by halting the electoral process for the leadership of the sport in Nigeria.

The international intervention puts the Nigeria Football Federation’s planned September 27 elections on indefinite hold. World football governing body FIFA and the Confederation of African Football are dispatching officials to Abuja to engage key stakeholders.

The delegation aims to examine the complex circumstances surrounding the federation following a wave of high-level resignations.

The leadership vacuum developed after NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and members of the Executive Committee stepped down.

The resignations followed intense public criticism over a prolonged decline in the nation’s football fortunes. On the pitch, the senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles, failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Meanwhile, the successful women’s team, the Super Falcons, missed qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time in history.

Multiple youth national teams also missed out on major continental and global tournaments during this difficult period.

Speculation previously arose that global administrators and Nigeria’s National Sports Commission had reached a concrete accord regarding administrative overhauls. However, FIFA firmly rejected claims that a final settlement has been secured.

Elkhan Mammadov, FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer, addressed the situation in an official communication.

In an email dated September 7 and addressed to NFF Acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, Mammadov stated: “FIFA and CAF are currently assessing the legal, governance, administrative and electoral implications arising from the current circumstances within the NFF.”

The visiting delegation will evaluate structural reforms to stabilize the administration before any new electoral calendar can proceed. Stakeholders in Abuja await the findings of the joint mission as Nigerian football navigates one of its most challenging institutional periods.

Restoring stability to Nigerian football will require transparent cooperation between international governing bodies and domestic sports administrators to rebuild institutional trust.
