FIFA has launched a formal investigation following allegations of racist abuse directed at prominent social media influencer IShowSpeed. The incident occurred during Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Cape Verde at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 3. The 21-year-old American streamer, whose legal name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., was broadcasting live from the stands during the round-of-32 match.
Footage captured on the streamer’s YouTube channel shows a confrontation between Watkins and a spectator wearing an Argentina jersey. During the exchange, the supporter appeared to tell the influencer, who is Black, to “go cry to the zoo.” Watkins, who is well-known as an avid supporter of Cristiano Ronaldo, has used his platform to livestream tournament matches, often jokingly “hate-watching” Ronaldo’s rival, Lionel Messi. His influence is substantial, with a following that includes over 50 million YouTube subscribers and 47 million followers on TikTok. Throughout the tournament, his broadcasts have featured high-profile appearances, including FIFA president Gianni Infantino and former football star Zlatan Ibrahimović.
