The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has relieved head coach of the Senior National Team, Otto Addo, of his duties, just three months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving the Black Stars facing uncertainty at a crucial stage of their preparations.

The decision was confirmed in a statement released in the early hours of Tuesday, March 31, 2026 shortly after Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Germany at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart. The defeat marked the team’s fourth straight loss, deepening concerns over their recent performances and overall direction.

In a statement posted on the official social media handles of GFA, the Association said: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo effective immediately.”

“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”

“The decision takes immediate effect,” the GFA boldly stated, adding that a “new technical direction” for the national team will be announced in due course.

The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.” – the statement read

The announcement sparked a mix of surprise, support, and frustration among fans online.

One fan argued: “Otto Addo is not going anywhere! Ghanaians should grow up—these are friendly matches. The goal is not to win but to try different strategies of football to see which one works best before the real game! ITS NOT ABOUT THE GOALS! ITS ABOUT TRYING STRATEGIES!”

Another applauded the FA, commenting: “Well done and it’s a bold decision by the FA”

Some, however, questioned the timing: “Aaaww so why on midnight”

The move comes less than three months before Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and raises questions about who will take over the reins and how quickly the team can regroup.

Otto Addo’s second stint in charge of the Black Stars had a mix of highs and lows. He guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 World Cup, and also led the squad during the 2022 World Cup, where Ghana produced a memorable win against South Korea but exited at the group stage.

However, results in recent months were inconsistent. The team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and lacklustre performances in international friendlies particularly the 5-1 loss to Austria on 27th March, 2026 and the 2-1 loss to Germany on 30th March, 2026 was appeared to have put pressure on the coach, a situation that ultimately led to his exit.

With the World Cup approaching fast, the GFA will now need to move quickly to stabilise the team and appoint a new technical setup. Whoever takes over will inherit a squad rich in talent but in urgent need of cohesion and confidence.
