Kofi Kapito, Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency, unleashed a blistering critique of Ghanaian football’s current state and the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) recent decision to extend presidential term limits.

Speaking on the ‘GTV Breakfast Show’ on August 18, 2025, Kofi Kapito said Ghana football had lost the passion and excitement it once commanded, insisting that “the game has collapsed.”

He accused those benefiting from the current system of being the loudest defenders while ordinary fans are sidelined.

When the host suggested the term extension might promote continuity in ongoing projects, Kofi Kapito responded with a sharp rebuke saying, “If you believe somebody needs a third term as a sitting president, you should make such provisions for your successor.”

Kofi Kapito described the GFA’s decision as a move driven by self-interest.

The GFA’s 31st Ordinary Congress, held earlier this month in Prampram, approved changes to the association’s statutes. Delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of increasing the maximum tenure of the presidency from two four-year terms to three.

Supporters of the changes maintain that longer tenure will give leaders more time to see through reforms such as youth football development, league restructuring, and referee welfare.

They also argue the amendment brings the GFA in line with CAF and FIFA rules, which allow three terms.

For his part, Kurt Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association has declined to say whether he will seek a third term if given the chance, and has instead said that his focus remains on improving Ghana Football.
