Ghana began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a winning note with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in their Group L opener.

The Black Stars had to withstand sustained pressure from Panama for much of the contest as both sides searched for a breakthrough in a closely fought encounter.

Panama created several promising opportunities, but Ghana’s defence remained resolute, while the goalkeepers produced important saves to keep the game level throughout the match.

With the game appearing destined to end in a draw, Ghana found the decisive goal deep into stoppage time. Caleb Yirenkyi scored from close range after a well-worked move to hand the Black Stars all three points and spark celebrations among the Ghanaian contingent.

Earlier, England defeated Croatia 4-2 in the other Group L fixture. The result leaves England and Ghana level on three points after the opening round of matches and sets up an intriguing encounter between the two sides in their next group game.

The victory gives Ghana an early advantage in the race for a place in the knockout stage and provides a confidence boost ahead of the team’s upcoming fixtures.

Ghana will next face England, while Panama take on Croatia as the battle for qualification from Group L intensifies.
