Ghana’s 4x100m relay team narrowly missed securing automatic qualification for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo after finishing third in their heat at the 2025 World Relays in Guangzhou, China.
The team clocked a time of 38.49 seconds, finishing behind competitors from Great Britain and Poland, who posted times of 38.18 seconds and 38.43 seconds, respectively. Despite a strong effort, Ghana’s performance means they will have one final opportunity to qualify for the Tokyo 2025 Championships.
The relay team’s split times showcased their speed and determination. Barnabas Aggerh opened with a 10.55-second leg, followed by Joseph Paul Amoah’s impressive 9.04-second run. Sean Sarfo-Antwi contributed a 9.77-second leg, while Ibrahim Fuseini finished with a 9.13-second split.
Together, these efforts resulted in Ghana’s total time of 38.49 seconds, just shy of their national record of 38.03 seconds. The narrow margin highlights both the team’s potential and the challenge ahead.
The results of the race emphasise the competitive nature of the event, with Ghana unable to edge out their European rivals. Great Britain and Poland’s faster times secured their spots directly in the Championships, leaving Ghana to await their final opportunity.
The team’s performance was commendable, but the importance of fine-tuning their strategy and speed ahead of the next qualifying round cannot be overstated.
Looking ahead, Ghana’s relay squad will compete in a crucial final qualifying race scheduled for Sunday. This race will determine whether they can secure their place in Tokyo 2025.
