The National Sports Authority (NSA) has withdrawn its recognition of the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) and its Executive Council with immediate effect, citing governance and accountability failures.

In a press release issued on Monday, January 19, 2026, the NSA said the decision takes effect from January 7, 2026, and follows the GSA’s “failure and/or refusal” to submit audited accounts, comply with provisions of its own constitution, and provide satisfactory responses to issues raised by the Authority.

The NSA further disclosed that it has formally notified World Aquatics (WA), the global governing body for aquatic sports, about the withdrawal of recognition.

Explaining the implications of the decision, the Authority said the GSA and its Executive Council are no longer permitted to oversee national swimming competitions, select athletes for international events, or conduct aquatic sports activities in Ghana or abroad.

Members of the GSA Executive Council are also barred from representing Ghana at any aquatic-related functions, whether locally or internationally.

However, the NSA clarified that the withdrawal of recognition does not amount to a total ban on swimming activities in the country. According to the Authority, swimming clubs, training programmes and competitions not directly organised by the GSA are allowed to continue.

The NSA reiterated its commitment to promoting, organising and supporting the development of aquatic sports in Ghana, while enforcing accountability, transparency, fairness and good governance across the sector.

“In pursuance thereof, the Authority is resolute that aquatic sports shall be reset to the benefit of all its stakeholders, principally our athletes and the entire good people of Ghana,” the statement said.
