Ghana’s Black Queens continued their impressive preparations for the delayed 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a thrilling 4-2 comeback win against Benin in Benslimane. Despite conceding two goals in the first half, Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s side showed resilience and determination to overturn the deficit and claim victory in their second friendly match ahead of the tournament.
The match started brightly for Ghana as Nina Norshie opened the scoring with a clever back flick just four minutes into the game. However, Benin responded quickly, equalizing seven minutes later before taking the lead from a penalty in the 32nd minute. Ghana went into halftime trailing 2-1, facing a stern test of character.
After the break, the Black Queens came out stronger and swiftly leveled the score through Alice Kusi’s equalizer. The momentum shifted decisively in Ghana’s favor when Susan Ama Duah put them ahead in the 70th minute. Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah then sealed the win with a goal in the 81st minute, completing a spirited comeback and boosting the team’s confidence ahead of WAFCON.
Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren praised his team’s fighting spirit and adaptability. “The players showed great character to bounce back after a tough first half. This victory is a testament to their hard work and belief as we prepare for the challenges ahead,” he said. The Black Queens will conclude their pre-tournament preparations with a final friendly against Nigeria in the coming days.
The 2024 WAFCON kicks off on July 5, with Ghana drawn in Group C alongside defending champions South Africa, Tanzania, and Mali. The Black Queens, making their 13th appearance, are eager to claim the title for the first time in their history, building momentum from their recent strong performances.
