The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has unequivocally condemned the racist abuse directed at Ghanaian international Antoine Semenyo during AFC Bournemouth’s Premier League opener against Liverpool at Anfield.

The disturbing incident occurred during the first half of the match, prompting a temporary halt in play when Semenyo reported the abuse to referee Anthony Taylor under the league’s anti-discrimination protocols.

Despite the hostile environment, Semenyo displayed remarkable resilience and professionalism, scoring two goals for Bournemouth in the game, which ultimately ended 4-2 in Liverpool’s favor.

His performance, marked by determination and skill, was widely praised as a strong rebuttal to the racist taunts from the stands.

In an official statement, SWAG expressed shock and dismay at the unprovoked racial attack on the 25 year old forward. The association lauded Semenyo’s bravery and called for justice, highlighting that the individual responsible a 47-year old was promptly arrested by Merseyside Police.

“SWAG salutes Semenyo for the amazing display of intrepidity and dauntlessness

while totally condemning the shameless racist who has subsequently been arrested

ro send the clearest possible signal would be offenders”; SWAG stated.

SWAG also commended Liverpool Football Club for their immediate condemnation of the offender and their commitment to imposing a lifetime ban if guilt is confirmed.

“SWAG equally salutes Liverpool Football Club for the swift condemnation of their

own fan and readiness to ban him for life if found guilty of all charges after the Police investigation”; SWAG outlined.

SWAG further noted the solidarity shown by major football bodies such as FIFA, UEFA, and the Ghana Football Association, all of whom have condemned the racist conduct and pledged to intensify efforts to eradicate discrimination from the sport.

Concluding their message, SWAG urged Antoine Semenyo to maintain his strength and confidence amid these challenges. The association emphasized that football’s enduring spirit will always triumph over racial bigotry, applauding the widespread support from fans, players and officials.

“Football will always be the winner against pathetic racial bigots,” SWAG affirmed, reinforcing their stand against racism in the beautiful game.
