The University for Development Studies (UDS) football team and management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Seidu Al-Hassan, proudly presented the prestigious FISU World University Football Championship Trophy to the King of Dagbon, His Majesty Ndan Ya Naa Abukari Mahama II, at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.

The symbolic event marked a union of academic excellence, sporting triumph, and cultural heritage, following UDS’s historic victory on the global stage.

In his address, His Majesty Ya Naa Abukari II lauded the university’s management and the gallant football team for their unprecedented achievement, which he described as a “monumental milestone” not only for Dagbon but for Ghana and the African continent as a whole.

“This global triumph is a historic achievement that has elevated the image of northern Ghana and inspired young people across the region,” the King remarked, beaming with pride.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Seidu Al-Hassan expressed deep gratitude for the Overlord’s consistent support and prayers, crediting the royal blessings as a key pillar behind the university’s success.

“Your Majesty, your unwavering support has been a source of strength to our institution. This glorious moment is as much yours as it is ours,” the Vice-Chancellor stated. He also used the opportunity to appeal for support in developing modern sports infrastructure at UDS to nurture more talents.

The Director of Sports and Head Coach of the victorious team, Ibrahim Tanko, extended heartfelt thanks to the King for his encouragement prior to the tournament.

“Your prayers and moral support were our backbone. You gave us the strength to believe we could take on the world — and we did,” Coach Tanko stated.

In a moving gesture of appreciation and cultural pride, His Majesty presented each player and technical staff member with a traditional Dagbon smock — a symbol of honour and identity. In return, the jubilant team thrilled the palace with lively jama songs, echoing gratitude and unity in song and dance.

To conclude the visit, His Majesty invited the delegation to tour the ongoing construction of the new Gbewaa Palace, showcasing Dagbon’s forward march in both tradition and development.

This unforgettable occasion did more than celebrate a world-class sporting achievement; it solidified the enduring bond between UDS and the cherished cultural heritage of Dagbon, a partnership of vision, pride, and promise.
