Government’s decision to cause a re-registration of all Mobile Phone SIM Cards has been applauded by some giant players in the telecommunication industry.

Government through the Ministry of Communication and Digitisation has given mobile phone users up to the 31st of December this year to re-register their sim cards or lose them permanently.

During a virtual media interaction, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN, Selorm Adadevoh, described the move by government as very positive and that telecommunication companies have already put in place systems not only to actualise it but make the policy worthwhile.

According to Mr. Adadevoh, a successful re-registration of all existing and new mobile phone SIM Cards will help customer identification and validation while helping the operators to coordinate and detect fraud.

This, the MTN CEO noted, will also enable the telecom players to map out the most effective and efficient strategies to either nib the canker of SIM fraud in the bud or reduce it substantially.

Touching on cost and access to mobile telephony in Ghana, Mr. Adadevoh said even though Ghana has the cheapest data in Africa, his company in particular is still investing hugely in infrastructure to further bring the cost down as well as improve access and quality of internet connectivity.

He said this year MTN is working hard to expand its 4G coverage from the current 48 percent to 78 percent since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in data usage.
