Togo’s transport ministry has suspended the operations of Yango, a ride-hailing app owned by Russian tech giant Yandex, due to security concerns.

The suspension comes just months after Yango began operating in the West African nation.

According to the ministry’s statement, released on Thursday, Yango started operating in June without obtaining the necessary authorisation and violated the country’s procedures.

The decision to suspend Yango’s activities was made to ensure the safety of passengers, maintain order, and follow legal procedures.

“The activities of the operator YANGO are therefore suspended across the entire national territory,” the statement read.

However, Yango clarified that it operates independently from Yandex and is headquartered in Dubai. The company is currently in talks with the Togolese government and is confident that a solution will be reached to resume operations in the country.
