Accra: Court remands 30 people for vandalizing Neoplan Police Station

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded 30 persons into police custody for allegedly attacking and vandalizing the Neoplan Police Station in Accra.

The accused persons aged between 20 and 51 years are traders around the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange. They are alleged to have damaged the Charge Office, the Station Officer’s office and also made away with two AK-47 rifles.

They have all pleaded not guilty to two charges of conspiracy to commit crime, causing unlawful damage and stealing.

The Judge, Afia Owusua Appiah, remanded them into custody to reappear on October 24. She told the police to conduct thorough investigations to ensure that those not found culpable are discharged.

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Samuel Ahiabor said it remains unclear what led the accused persons to attack the police station.

Presenting the facts before the court, Chief Inspector Ahiabor, said last October 9 at about 7:50pm, one Isobah allegedly stole a mobile phone belonging to a young man and when he was being chased, he jumped into the Odaw river in a bid to escape.

The young man also jumped into the river to retrieve his mobile phone from the said Isobah. In the ensuing struggle over the mobile phone Isobah got drowned.

The prosecutor said a friend of Isobah also jumped into the river and he also got drowned. Chief Inspector Ahiabor told the court that on the same day, the accused persons organized themselves, marched to the Neoplan Police Station and vandalized the place.

He said following intelligence, the accused persons were arrested and the rifles were retrieved from them.

Investigations are still ongoing.
