Ada District on high alert following clashes between workers of Electrochem and Local Salt Miners

Calm has been restored to parts of the Ada West District where two people were shot dead and many others including the District Chief Executive sustained various degrees of injuries.

The incident happened at Toflokpo following a clash between local salt miners and workers of the Electrochem Salt company owned by business mogul Daniel Mackorley popular known as MacDan.

The company has been given a 42-acre concession to mine salt but some of the communities have opposed the move, insisting it will deprive them of their livelihood.

This has led to a long-standing dispute between members of these communities and the workers of the company.

The Ada West District Coordinating Director, Aaron Otoo, told GBC News that the company had been advised to wait for some time before entering into the concession to begin work.

However, days to the stipulated time, the workers yesterday went there to start work resulting in the deadly clashes.

Mr. Otoo warned the workers not to attempt going back to the site to avoid further disturbances.

Meanwhile, the District Security Council has scheduled a meeting this afternoon to decide on the way forward.
