The Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission has imposed a four-month ban on hunting, capturing, and destroying wild animals in the country’s forests.

The annual hunting ban for all wild animals except the grasscutter, which can be hunted with a license, known as the “close season”, begins on Monday, August 1, and ends on December 1, this year.

This is to offer respite for the wild animals to breed and wean their young ones.

The Commission said Ghana’s wildlife are overhunted and has reached a point where the dwindling number of animals is threatening food security at rural and urban communities.

The ban is to ensure the survival of species and the integrity of the country as a signatory to international conventions. The general public is cautioned not to patronize game, dead or alive, except for grasscutter, so that hunters will find it uneconomical to hunt the animals.
