By: Murtala Issah

Renewed chieftaincy clashes at Yong Dakpemyili in the Tamale Metropolis of the Northern Region, last night, left several persons injured and heightened insecurity among residents of the community.

A source within the Regional Police Command, confirmed the incident to GBC NEWS in Tamale, and revealed that sophisticated weapons were used in the shoot-out.

The use of high-grade weapons in the community has heightened concerns about the proliferation of weapons in the area.

Sources in the community told GBC NEWS, that calm has returned following the intervention of the Police.

Yong Dakpemyili has a long-standing chieftaincy dispute between two brothers over who is the rightful person to occupy the Yong skin.

The disagreement between the brothers has led to several clashes in the past, with both sides recording deaths, injuries and destruction of property.

Yong Dakpemyili is a peri-urban community that lies on the outskirts of Tamale. Until the conflict erupted several years ago, the area, was seeing a fast transition from a rural to an urban community.

The chieftaincy clashes in the community have significantly slowed down development in the area.
