The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih has admonished workers to inculcate and uphold what he describes as “the virtues of hardworking, sincerity, loyalty and commitment” towards the achievement of organisational goals.
Dr Bin Salih gave the advice in a message at this year’s May Day celebration in Wa.
GBC’s Emmanuel Mensah-Abludo reports that the event was held at the Wa Technical Institute instead of the usual venue, the Wa Jubilee Park because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Wa, Tahiru Issahaku Moomin who deputised for the Regional Minister stressed the necessity for workers to maximise their efforts in increasing productivity in all sectors of the economy.
He observed that the cooperation between organised Labour and government has contributed to fewer industrial strikes in the first term of the government. Mr Moomin pledged that the upper West Regional coordinating council will support organised labour.
He noted: “I want to assure Organised Labour of the support of the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council to further deepen this cooperation. It is my hope that this will translate into higher productivity at the workplace and better conditions of service for employees.”
The Acting Upper West Regional Secretary of TUC, Brother Godwin Gariba indicated that government can count on organised Labour and all workers in the country in government’s efforts towards quick economic recovery.
He said: “Workers are ready to work with government and businesses to bring our economy back to the pre-pandemic grow path. We believe that with a strong social partnership guarded by mutual trust and mutual respect, we can achieve economic growth that will benefit all parts of the economy.”
The Upper West Regional Chairman of TUC, Ibrahim Wemah stated that the days of minimum wage are over, saying what we need now is a living wage.
Twelve workers were recognised for outstanding contributions to Union activities.
