The Coalition of Volta Youth has reechoed its call on government to reconsider the creation of a new region out of the Volta Region.
The group urged government to solicit for the views of the Ewe speaking citizens of the region before the Electoral Commission proceeds with the impending referendum.
Addressing Chiefs and Queen mothers of some traditional areas in the region, after a peaceful demonstration on the streets of Ho, Chairman of the Coalition, Simon Kofi Ohene appealed to them let their voices be heard about the division.
The Coalition of Volta Youth has been agitating against the split of the Volta Region since the Ministry of Regional Reorganisation and Development announced to commence the process.
They argued that the proposed division will rather disintegrate the unity and peaceful coexistence among the distinct ethnic groups in the region.
Tuesday’s peaceful demonstration saw several members of the Coalition parading the streets of Ho holding placard some of which read, ” The affected region is the whole Volta”, “Stand up and be counted Voltarians”, “Apply wisdom and common sense to the constitution”, among others.
They later presented a petition to the chiefs for onward delivery to government.
Chairman of the Coalition, Simon Ohene was not happy that majority of the Ewe speaking Voltarians did not have the chance to share their opinion during the Commission of Inquiry’s public hearing in the region though the division affects them too.
He stated that as at now, the commission’s findings and the boundaries of the proposed region have not been disclosed. Mr. Ohene entreated government to reposition the local government concept to ensure rapid development, contrary to the notion that the proposed new region will be transformed overnight.
The President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede who received the petition urged the group to embark on their activities in a peaceful manner stressing that they should adhere to rules enshrined in the Constitution.
