It ends a five-year legal battle that began in the wake of the huge abuse scandal that rocked US sport.

The former Gymnastics Team Doctor was jailed in 2018 for more than 300 years for molesting gymnasts.

Athletes including a number of Olympic medalists testified about how Larry Nassar sexually abused them.

The first woman to go public with allegations against Nassar in 2016, Rachael Den Hollander, welcomed the news of settlement, writing on Twitter that “This chapter is finally closed.”  Larry Nassar was accused of sexual abuse by more than 330 women and girls at USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University.

Lawyer John C Manly, representing the victims described yesterday’s settlement as “historic” but said they would continue to “pursue justice” against officials who had failed to investigate.

He paid tribute to the women who had testified publicly, ”they prevailed because of the courage and tenacity of the survivors”.
