Five people have died and five others are injured after a cargo plane speeds off the runway at Miami airport, the local mayor says.
The Amazon Air cargo plane, operated by 21 Air, overshot the runway while attempting to land at Miami International Airport.
“We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened,” Amazon says.
The incident happened at about 14:00 local time (19:00 BST), according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Videos and images from the area show thick black smoke rising over the aircraft that crashed after its flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
A new statement from the airport says that the flight that crashed was an Amazon cargo plane.
“At approximately 2 p.m. today, Prime Air flight 7598 overran Miami International Airport’s diagonal runway and is disabled at the northwest end of the airport,” the airport says in a statement.
“All runways and taxiways at [Miami International Airport] are currently closed as of 3:00 p.m. and a ground stop is in effect.”
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is responding to the scene, the airport says, directing “questions regarding injuries or fatalities” to them.
