Malagasies will on Wednesday go to the polls for a presidential run-off to elect a new President. It is straight contest between two former heads of state Andry Rajoelina and Marc Ravolomanana. The Former Disc Jockey Rajoelina, pulled 39 percent of the vote in the first round, while Ravalomanana got 35 percent.

Over ten million Malagasy registered voters are expected to cast their votes in the keenly contested presidential run-off. The World Bank in its recent report described Madagascar as one of the world’s poorest nations, despite its ecological diversity richness.

More than two-thirds of the population of 25 million live in extreme poverty, while corruption is widespread.

Andry Rajoelina

The leading candidate Rajoelina 44, is promising young, but vibrant leadership that will scale up the country’s solar energy by building factories to that effect. He is also promising to purchase 10 helicopters to help the rural southern community to combat crime.

Marc Ravolomanana

For his part, the 69-year-old Ravalomanana, who led Madagascar from 2002 to 2009, is appealing to voters based on his experience. He is promising to offer competent, mature leadership to move Malagasies from poverty.  The two former Malagasy leaders face off for the first time since the political turmoil in 2009 forced Ravalomanana from power. Both candidates have said they will accept the outcome of this runoff.
