Four people have died in Chicago hospital following a shooting incident.
They include two female members of staff, a police officer, and the gunman himself.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel confirmed that the two women killed were a doctor and a pharmaceutical assistant.
A police spokesman said the gunman died in the exchanges but it is not clear if he took his own life.
A second officer avoided injury after a bullet fired in his direction lodged in his gun.
Officials say the gunman appeared to target a woman he was in a relationship with, but they did not suggest why.
