Ukrainian officials say a Russian drone strike killed five people and injured 67 others in the central Ukrainian city of Pavlohrad, a city in Dnipropetrovsk region. The daylight attack struck a shopping mall in a busy logistics hub located near Dnipro. Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi noted that the assault occurred when the streets were full of people.

Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha reported that eight children were among the wounded. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offered condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. The Russians used drones to kill people who were simply standing near shopping centres, Zelensky stated. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha characterized the assault as a tactic of coercion. Russia believes that relentless attacks on civilians can exhaust Ukrainians and force Ukraine into concession, Sybiha added.

Multiplying Strikes on Commercial Centers

Civilians face growing danger as shopping centers become frequent targets in the ongoing conflict. Ukrainian media reported that similar air strikes hit malls in Zaporizhzhia and Sumy earlier in the week. The mall in Zaporizhzhia was almost completely destroyed on Monday, though it was closed at the time and avoided casualties. A Wednesday attack in Sumy killed two people and wounded 20, while a Thursday aerial bombing injured eight more.

These incidents follow a pattern of urban destruction. Last month, a strike in Kryvyi Rih killed at least 16 people and injured 130. Meanwhile, Russian-controlled areas have also seen commercial targets hit, including a reported Ukrainian drone strike on a mall in Mariupol and a previous attack in Donetsk.

Cross Border Casualties and Stalled Diplomacy

The war continues to expand its toll on both sides of the border. Russian officials reported that a Ukrainian seaborne drone attack on the resort city of Sochi wounded 28 people overnight on Wednesday. Additional Ukrainian strikes resulted in three more deaths, including a 15-year-old girl and a man in Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia, alongside a fatality in the town of Novy Oskol.

Diplomatic efforts face severe headwinds amid the violence. A full-scale war has been raging between Russia and Ukraine since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion more than four and a half years ago. Recent peacemaking efforts by envoys sent by US President Donald Trump yielded few concrete results following talks in Moscow and Kyiv. Fundamental differences between the warring nations remain as daily drone launches outpace regional air defenses. Observers note that breaking the diplomatic deadlock will require addressing core security guarantees and territorial disputes to prevent further civilian suffering across the region.
