United States federal investigators have recovered the flight recorders from the Amazon cargo plane that crashed at Miami International Airport, though authorities emphasize that human rescue and victim recovery remain the immediate priority.

The 32-year-old Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air on its third flight of the day from San Juan, Puerto Rico, overran the runway during a Sunday landing shortly before 14:00 local time.

The aircraft breached a perimeter fence and struck two vehicles on a nearby road, killing five people and seriously injuring five others. National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy described the crash scene as “utter devastation”.

Officials confirmed that both the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder were sent to NTSB headquarters in Washington for evaluation.

Descent and Impact Dynamics

Tracking data indicates the heavy cargo jet remained airborne deep into Runway 30 before crossing the tarmac at approximately 130 miles per hour.

The aircraft plowed through a grassy patch, shattered a chain-link fence with razor wire, and crumbled concrete barriers meant to secure the perimeter.

The jet sliced across a four-lane road, striking a 2012 Ford contract cleaning van carrying seven people and a Toyota SUV with three passengers.

Five individuals inside the vehicles lost their lives, while the status of the two pilots who evacuated the cockpit remains unconfirmed. Spencer Deno, mayor of the nearby Village of Virginia Gardens, recalled feeling his house shake before rushing to the scene and seeing perimeter officers converging from multiple directions.

Investigative Focus and Weather Factors

The NTSB deployed a 32-person team to examine flight history, crew training, radar data, mechanical performance, and meteorological conditions. Preliminary analysis indicates an active thunderstorm hovered near the airport during descent, potentially generating a sudden tailwind that prevented the aircraft from shedding speed effectively.

Investigators are also scrutinizing whether the runway should have featured an engineered materials arresting system, a specialized bed of crushable concrete designed to decelerate overrunning aircraft before they exit airport property.

Homendy stressed that the agency is deeply committed to determining the exact sequence of events to prevent future tragedies.

Corporate Response and Infrastructure Impact

Amazon expressed profound grief over the accident and confirmed close cooperation with oversight authorities, while 21 Air offered condolences and pledged full assistance to the ongoing federal probe.

The disaster severely disrupted operations during the busy Labor Day holiday weekend, forcing the closure of two of the airport’s four runways and triggering widespread flight cancellations and multi-hour delays across incoming routes.

Aviation experts note that regulatory liability falls primarily upon the air carrier rather than the logistics contractor, echoing previous high-profile investigations.

Recovery crews continue meticulous work at the wreckage site as investigators prepare subsequent public briefings to release verified operational data.
