A 17-year-old girl has been killed and three other people injured in a violent sword attack at the Brinellskolan secondary school in Fagersta, central Sweden. The tragedy unfolded on Friday afternoon as students returned to classrooms following the summer break, shaking the town of approximately 12,000 residents located about 170 kilometers northwest of Stockholm.
Official response to the violence
Swedish police responded to the scene after receiving emergency calls regarding ongoing violence at the school around 2 p.m. local time. In an official statement, law enforcement confirmed the status of the investigation. “Police have responded to the scene and one person has been taken into custody,” officials stated. They added that authorities remain engaged in a complex operation at the site. “Police are continuing to work at the scene with a number of different resources. The public is urged to respect the roadblocks and listen to police instructions,” the police said.
Casualties and Suspect Details
In addition to the fatal victim, two boys aged 12 and 17 sustained serious injuries, while a third person suffered minor injuries. The lone suspect is an 18-year-old man—identified by local media as a former student—who was wearing a helmet during the assault. Law enforcement confirmed that officers discharged their service weapons during the response, though the suspect was not struck by gunfire prior to his detention. Investigators are treating the case as murder and attempted murder and have already carried out two house searches.
Municipality confirms school lockdown
The Fagersta municipality issued an official update regarding the gravity of the situation. “An assailant armed with a sword has entered Brinellskolan and wounded several people,” the municipality stated. Officials confirmed that security measures were expanded across the town, including a precautionary lockdown for other area schools while police searched the 500-student campus.
The regional state of emergency implemented on Friday was successfully lifted by Saturday.
Government monitoring the situation
The Swedish government is actively tracking the aftermath of the attack. Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer emphasized that high-level officials are maintaining constant communication with police leadership to manage the response. “We have been informed of a serious incident in Fagersta. The police are on site and working very intensively with the incident,” Strommer told Reuters. Public broadcaster SVT noted a heavy security presence in the town, with ambulances, multiple police units, and a helicopter deployed to the scene. The investigation into the motive and circumstances surrounding the assault remains ongoing.
Political and Royal Reactions
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited the school on Saturday morning, where floral tributes have been laid to honor the victims. On Friday, Prime Minister Kristersson described the attack as a “serious incident” in a post on X, stating that authorities do not yet know the motive behind the act. Additionally, Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf stated that he received the news “with dismay and sadness”.
As the community of Fagersta grapples with the shock of this violent episode, local officials and law enforcement continue to prioritize public safety and transparent communication while the full scope of the investigation unfolds.
