King Charles III has officially reestablished that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will remain non-working royals following their relocation back to the United Kingdom after six years in North America.
The clarification arrived via a formal letter distributed by Lord Chamberlain, the most senior officer of the British royal household.
The communication was directed to senior government figures, military officials, and the Duke’s private team to prevent any administrative confusion. Palace sources noted the memo was published proactively to ensure total transparency ahead of the autumn diary period.
Maintaining the 2020 Sandringham Agreement
The recent directive reinforces the foundational terms established during the 2020 Sandringham Summit when the couple stepped back from official duties.
The Palace stressed that a hybrid role remains entirely off the table. The Lord Chamberlain noted in the correspondence that it is “well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family”.
This baseline boundary ensures that any public appearances or philanthropic endeavors undertaken by the couple moving forward carry no official royal endorsement.
Private Citizens and Independent Operations
The Duke and Duchess have established complete financial independence since their departure, pursuing media projects, literary works, and entrepreneurial ventures in California. The official letter explicitly outlines their current standing, stating that all philanthropic pursuits remain a “personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity”. The text classifies their overall position as “akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests”. Consequently, all administrative inquiries, correspondence, and operational matters must bypass the central royal household and route directly through the couple’s independent office.
Security Protocols and Public Funds
Logistical and security questions regarding the family’s resettlement have been cordially compartmentalized by the Crown. The directive explicitly instructs that any organizational queries involving potential recourse to public funds must be directed straight to Buckingham Palace. Regarding personal protection, the document clarifies that “any operational security issues should continue to be directed to the relevant police authorities”. This division leaves protective oversight firmly within the jurisdiction of the state’s official evaluation committees rather than the private purview of the monarch.
Balancing Tradition and Modern Transparency
By opting for an open and formalized administrative clarification rather than relying on informal briefings, Buckingham Palace aims to balance institutional boundaries with modern public accountability. This measured approach protects the integrity of the Crown’s official calendar while fairly acknowledging the personal autonomy of family members living outside the institution.
