Singapore Airlines secured the top honor as the world’s best airline for 2026. The aviation industry gathered on Friday, September 18, at London’s Langham Hotel for the annual Skytrax Awards. Industry leaders celebrated excellence amid ongoing global challenges.

Singapore reclaimed the title from last year’s winner, Qatar Airways. The win marks the sixth time Singapore claimed the top prize in the awards history. Determined through an annual global customer satisfaction survey managed by the UK-based aviation consultancy Skytrax, the honors serve as a closely watched benchmark for passenger experience across international carriers. Qatar Airways dropped to second place in the final standings.

Global Carriers Dominate Top Rankings

Cathay Pacific Airways, All Nippon Airways, Turkish Airlines, and Emirates rounded out the top six positions. An elite group of seven airlines historically dominates the upper tiers of the list. Major US carriers remained completely absent from the rankings. Air Canada stood alone as the sole North American representative in the top tier.

Regional winners spanned the globe. Bangkok Airways earned honors as the best airline in Asia and best regional carrier. Ethiopian Airlines led the African category. LATAM dominated South America, and Turkish Airlines claimed the top spot for Europe.

Industry Leaders Navigate Turbulent Times

Global aviation faces severe headwinds from ongoing conflicts and rising costs. Industry executives discussed mounting pressures on the sidelines of the event. Edward Plaisted acknowledged the difficult operating environment.

“The passenger experience, mainly driven by the industry’s increasingly fierce competition, is always getting better,” Plaisted told the media. “It takes a big event — a 9/11 event — to really cause a problem.”

Goh Choon Phong credited the primary victory to company personnel.

The big prize was a “testament to the dedication and professionalism of our people,” Goh said in a pre-prepared statement.

Focus Shifts Toward Premium Travel

Carriers increasingly rely on high-spending passengers to maintain financial stability. Mark Nasr emphasized the strategic shift toward luxury offerings.

“The industry is getting more competitive,” Nasr noted. “There’s a theme right now around the growth of premium travel and customers that are very discerning. They have large budgets, and airlines are investing to earn that business. With fuel prices increasing so much, the airlines that will be able to sustain themselves will be the ones able to charge a premium to justify their products.”

Nasr expressed confidence in navigating diplomatic tensions.

“Relationships ebb and flow over time, but we continue to believe in the core strength of the partnership — economic and social — between the US and Canada and we’ll weather the current circumstances,” Nasr added.

Navigating an Era of Geopolitical Shifts

Beyond shifting economic models and fierce luxury competition, modern commercial aviation faces an unprecedented matrix of diplomatic friction points and regional instability. As airline executives chart flight paths through persistent airspace closures and shifting trade dynamics, the ability to balance strict cost-management with elevated customer service standards remains the definitive benchmark for survival and long-term industry leadership.

The complete global standing reflects the fierce competition across international markets, with the full Skytrax results outlined below:
