US President Donald Trump will deliver his first speech to the UN General Assembly since 2020 on Tuesday, where he is expected to reaffirm his “America First” approach and criticise international institutions. His remarks come at a time when questions continue to be raised about Washington’s role in global affairs.

The address coincides with heightened tensions in the Middle East, as Israel intensifies its military campaign in Gaza City. The offensive has advanced into the city centre from both the north and south, according to eyewitnesses.

The situation unfolds as several world leaders, including France, move towards formally recognising Palestine as a state, a step the US has opposed. Israel has argued that such recognition rewards Hamas for the 7 October 2023 attack, in which around 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage.

Since that attack, more than 65,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s operations, according to figures from Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.
