Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called upon Ghana and 46 other countries to protect their citizens from covert recruitment by Russia to fight in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Addressing World Leaders In New York

Mr. Zelenskyy spoke before the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He highlighted a widespread international recruitment crisis. The Ukrainian leader stated that Moscow relies on nationals from 47 different countries. He specifically listed Ghana, Nepal, Tajikistan, India, Yemen, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Belarus, Sudan, and South Africa.

Deception And Battlefield Deployment

Many foreign nationals arrive in Russia through deception and tricks. Other individuals face immediate deployment to active frontlines. Kyiv has already received formal requests from foreign governments seeking the repatriation of captured prisoners of war.

A Direct Appeal To Vulnerable Nations

The Ukrainian president issued a direct plea to representatives of the affected nations. He urged foreign governments to protect their populations from Moscow’s recruitment networks.

“I want to speak directly to every representative of these 47 countries: You know what Russia is doing with your people, your citizens. Take care of them. And do not let them end up on another front. Do not let Putin drag you into his war. Do not let Russia put out its fires, cover up its shame, and pay for its madness with the lives of your people. Limit his room to act. Limit his money. Limit his war.”

Ghanaian Casualties And Diplomatic Action

Ghana remains directly implicated in this transnational recruitment pipeline. Mr. Zelenskyy did not disclose exact figures or specific recruitment mechanics concerning Ghanaian nationals. However, official data from Accra reveals a devastating toll.

In August, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed staggering losses. 62 Ghanaians have died in connection with the conflict. 15 additional citizens remain missing.

Bilateral Talks In Moscow

Mr. Ablakwa addressed these developments during an official diplomatic visit to Moscow. He engaged in high-level bilateral talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The discussions centered on clandestine networks luring young Ghanaians to Russia under false pretenses. Russian authorities reportedly committed to cooperating with Accra to halt illegal enlistment schemes.

Protecting Youth From Foreign Wars

The Ghanaian government continues to intensify diplomatic and advocacy measures. Officials aim to dismantle underground recruitment rings operating across international borders. Minister Ablakwa emphasized that Accra refuses to accept the loss of its youth to a foreign conflict.

“This is not our war, and it should not be claiming Ghanaian lives.”

Balancing Sovereign Security And Regional Stability

As developing nations navigate complex geopolitical realignments, safeguarding citizens from external exploitation requires robust legislative enforcement and transparent international cooperation.
