The Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumbungu Constituency, Ras Mubarak has described the shooting and killing of innocent protesters in Nigeria by armed military men as most unfortunate.

According to him, the chaos situation as a result of days of street protests in some parts of Nigeria should be a worry for all African countries and not Nigeria alone.

Speaking to Journalists in Parliament on 21st October, 2020, the MP called the Nigerian Government to address the concern of the protesters and ask the military to stop the shooting.

Ras Mubarak cautioned the protesters to be observant of persons who would want to capitalize on the situation for selfish gains.

He is however optimistic that the situation will be resolved since the matter has attracted global condemnation.

From the media, Nigerian security forces opened fire on Tuesday night (October, 20) at a demonstration in Lagos against police brutality, hitting several people according to witnesses, in a major escalation of the unrest that has gripped the country for two weeks.

The extent of the casualties was unclear, but some witnesses reported seeing people who were killed.

A police officer who witnessed the episode and spoke on condition of anonymity said that 11 people had been killed. But that report that could not be immediately corroborated.

The shooting came toward the end of a day of mounting violence in multiple cities, with the national police deploying riot squads in the capital, Abuja, in Lagos and elsewhere.

Last week, President Buhari agreed to dismantle SARS and carry out other police reforms, vowing to “ensure that all those responsible for misconduct are brought to justice.”

But the demonstrations have not abated. People note that the government has promised before to do away with SARS, yet it still exists, and they argue that a newly created police unit will just be the same menace in new uniforms.
