President Emmerson Mnangagwa has suspended the Vice Chancellor of Zimbabwe’s main University Levi Nyagura, for allegedly wrongly awarding Grace Mugabe a PhD four years ago.
The suspension comes ahead of his trial next month. Mr Nyagura, is facing charges of criminal abuse of office for allegedly breaching the University of Zimbabwe’s rules on awarding Doctorates.
In a statement, Mr Mnangagwa, Chancellor of the University replaced Levi Nyagura with another academic Paul Mapfumo, who will be acting until Nyagura’s case is finalised.
The statement said the suspension is in line with the University of Zimbabwe Act.
Earlier this year academics from the University of Zimbabwe petitioned the Anti-corruption Commission to investigate Grace Mugabe’s PhD, awarded to her in 2014.
The academics said Grace Mugabe had not gone through the same processes that other doctoral candidates follow, which made the awarding of the degree “very suspicious”.
