The Daily Graphic lauds a new proposal by government to ensure the safety of Ghanaians especially domestic servants who seek jobs in the Gulf region. It suggests that all employment agencies be monitored and scrutinised to ensure that they have visible and known addresses. The paper advises that the Ministries of Employment and Labour Relations; Women, Gender and Social Protection and Foreign Affairs be actively involved in any contracts signed by would-be-immigrant workers. Such contracts should ensure regular contact between signatories and supervisory agencies to prevent inhumane treatment of domestic workers. The Graphic says the average Ghanaian is willing to work, so government should create more jobs since most of those willing to travel will stay home to work.
The Ghanaian Times joins members of BONABOTO, an association comprising people of Bolgatanga Nandom, Bongo and Tongo in appealing to government to fast track payment of feeding grants to Senior High Schools in the north of the country. The paper is worried that while government has been unable to pay the grants promptly, more students are going to be admitted to SHS this year, and government is going to be under higher financial pressure. The Times therefore urges all interest groups to resolve all the problems identified with the introduction of the free SHS programme to ensure that the reopening of the 2018/2019 academic year takes off smoothly.
The Today Newspaper says the fight against illegal mining or galamsey is far from over and government would require vital information to flush out perpetrators. It notes the open threat by the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners to expose any illegal mining activity by Chiefs, politicians and other high profile figures. The paper asks why the Association would be making the threat at this time knowing that they bear the brunt of the ban on small scale mining. It avers that small scale miners should be the first to report such nation wreckers as it will take collective effort to fight the galamsey menace.
