Story by Nana Ama Gyapong.

Ghana’s first trained music therapist, Mawuyrami Ocloo, has stated that every human being needs music therapy depending on the situation of the person especially with children and premature babies.

She said this during an interview with co-host Valerie Danso on the GTV Breakfast Show.

Music therapy is the clinical use of music to accomplish individualized goals such as reducing stress, improving mood and self-expression. In Ghana, it is very rare to find people attending music therapy, but Madam Ocloo explained that it is necessary to have music therapy, once in a while.

Furthermore, she pointed out that a premature baby will need music therapy to calm them down with oxygen saturation as well as help them grow quickly. Again, she described that a child having speech, emotional or physical challenges, music therapy can be helpful in such an instance. Also, music therapy can help adults who have Alzheimer’s, Dementia and Parkinson’s as well.

She concluded by encouraging parents who have children with emotional and physical challenges to visit a musical therapist to get help instead of keeping them at home. She encouraged others to study music therapy in order to create more awareness about the benefits of music therapy.

Mawuyrami Ocloo (nee Akoto) is the first ever trained Ghanaian Music Therapist.
