Items such as weaved baskets are sought after during occasions such as Christmas. While hamper sellers need them for business, individuals also use them for personal purposes. This makes those in the weaving business busy due to demand.

GBC’s Chelsea Amy Grant and Rhoda Yorke visited basket weavers at Cantonments, in Accra to know at firsthand how patronage of baskets and other weaving products are going, few days to Christmas.

The weavers shared varied views on the sale of the products and hoped there would be an improvement as the days towards Christmas approached.

“Mostly when it is time for Christmas, the hampers we are doing so far is marketing for the ratings go high but as well as compared to the previous and recently the market has run down a bit. It has not been like the way we expected it before now everything has reduced.”

”These days the market is not going well. They do not buy things from us.”

”So this time they buy things from us. This year is better than last year because last year they did not buy things from us at all but this year is good or bad, because at times from 20th to 24th that is when you can see if the market is going or not. At the moment the market is slow,” according to the weavers.

Buyers of the baskets hold contrary views. Some of them said despite the presence of Covid-19, the demand for hampers is quite encouraging.

”One of our typical clients this time, I do not want to mention her name for good reasons, has given us such orders and then we are busy shopping around for the items”.

”This year sales have boomed recently because of the easing of the covid limitations.”

”I think people are now coming out and people are doing a bit more of this stuff.”

”I will say that sales are up. I am here because at Christmas we are going to sell it. We would put something like rice and the rest then we sell.”
