Information Minister calls for stakeholder engagement to ensure speedy passage of Broadcasting Bill

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, says the successful passage of the broadcasting bill, which is at the draft stage and yet to be tabled before parliament for consideration, requires enhanced stakeholder participation by way of input.

He said the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communication should be considered a critical stakeholder in ensuring the speedy passage of the draft bill while building synergy with key institutions to help with the agenda.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah made the observation at a Stakeholder Review Meeting on Media Support Programs held in Accra.

The interactive session was to dialogue on the implementation of critical media campaign modules, championed by the Information Ministry since 2018. These include coordinated mechanisms on the safety of journalists, enhanced media capacity programs as well as campaign against misinformation and disinformation.

It also discussed issues bordering on Right to Information and fact-checking.

During an open forum, a member of the Communication Committee of Parliament, Sam George, said it is important to clampdown on disinformation. He, however, called for new legislation to protect Ghana’s democracy and the digital space.
