Plan International Ghana, a non-governmental organisation, has donated relief items worth thousands of Ghana Cedis to victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage-induced flood disaster at Tadze in the South Tongu district of the Volta Region.

The items, mostly food stuff, were meant to empathise with the affected people and also form part of Plan International Ghana’s social responsibility to empower and support communities, especially their operational area communities. The items included, but were not limited to, 1000 bags of drinking water, bags of rice, bags of corn flour, bags of gari, mosquito nets and repellents, baby diapers, sanitary towels, packs of toiletries, and boxes of cooking oil, among others.

Presenting the items, the Southern Programme Influencing and Impact Area Manager of Plan International Ghana, Mr. Sulemana Gbana, said the organisation has taken notice of the devastating impact of the spillage on the lives and livelihoods of people in communities, especially in their operational areas.

While calling for more support for the victims, Mr Gbana assured the people that Plan International Ghana will continue to partner with other key stakeholders to offer more support to the victims.

“Based on our programme we had two levels of support. We decided to offer the first level of support to the Tadze community because we have our sponsored children here, and the donor parents are interested in knowing the conditions and whatever we are going to do to improve their living conditions after being hit by the devastating impact of the flood as a result of the spillage,” he said.

“So today we have been able to mobilise some relief items in the form of food and non-food items to give them. We are also going to offer the second level of support to the District Assembly on Monday, October 6, 2023, to enable the Assembly also support other affected communities,” Mr Gbana added.

The Deputy District NADMO Coordinator, Mr Suraju Baba, received the donation on behalf of the victims, commended Plan International Ghana for coming to the aid of the victims, and called for more support.

“In addition to our appreciation to Plan International Ghana, we also appeal to those who have it and can support to come and assist affected communities in South Tongu because it seems as if the concentration is only on North and Central Tongu, but South Tongu also needs serious support for the affected victims,” he noted.
