Concerns have been raised about the possibility of Ghana losing her right as a major player on the global cocoa market since news broke that China has begun producing cocoa.

These concerns are compounded by reports which indicate that China earns more than Ghana in the sale of cocoa.

General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU), Edward Kareweh says if the trend continues, Ghana may lose her place on the global market to China by 2022.

He was quick to add that China is currently not a match to Ghana in terms of influence and quality of cocoa production.

He called for policy action to ensure that Ghana does not lose her place in the global market.

Mr Kareweh also raised concerns over the lack of standards governing the trading of food items in the country. The situation, he says, is not in line with the notion that Agriculture is the backbone of Ghana’s economy.
