The Accra East Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountant Ghana (ICAG), has contributed to the smiles on the faces of orphans following their donation of assorted items to the Countryside Orphanage in Bawjiase.
The annual ritual, which started six years ago, is aimed at alleviating the burden on the school, saw the ICAG giving away items to some selected needy institutions in the country.
Items donated include toiletries, bags of rice, sugar, tom brown, gallons of cooking, assorted drinks, and an undisclosed cash amount worth GH¢10,000.
As part of their yearly program, the Accra East Society of ICAG identifies needy schools to support since the group’s inception in 2016.
Countryside Orphanage, which started in the 1980s, has added a school to help the community and the orphans around Bawjiase.
With the current population of over 50, the orphanage boasts of over 16 teachers. The school relies on philanthropic efforts from the public for its smooth operations.
The chairperson of Accra East Society of ICAG, Mrs Benedicta Deede Tagoe, explained the reason behind the gesture in a short ceremony at the school’s premises.
“We thought about the welfare of these children looking at the current economic difficulty. So our members agreed to the programs of such nature to support these orphans.”
“The love for the underprivileged influenced us to gather this small amount of money to help. We want to help take care of the children. It’s our hope that other organizations will come and support them so we all have a peaceful society.”
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Humphrey Patterson, who is in charge of child welfare at Countryside Orphanage, used the opportunity to appeal to the public to support the school.

“We really appreciate this enormous gesture. It’s something that will go a long way to help these children. We want other organizations to come to our aid without recourse to the distance to help raise these children together.”
