The Municipal Chief Executive of Keta, Emmanuel Gemega, says the Assembly is convening an emergency stakeholders meeting over the opening of flood control gates at Havedzi, Xorvi and Kedzi.

The opening of the flood gates is to allow excess water from the Keta lagoon to flow into the sea and to reduce the level of flooding in the communities along the lagoon, which cut across Ketu South and Keta Municipalities as well as the Anloga District.

The Assembly sent engineers to open the gates last Saturday, but they were met with resistance from the youth who massed up at the site to protest the action.

Basing their fear on a similar situation in 1963, the youth argued that cutting the sand strip would expose their communities to serious flooding.

Mr. Gemega, however, explained that better scientific measures have been put in place to regulate the flow of water into the sea.

Engineers of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority have also expressed concern about the decision of the Assembly to cut through the sand strip. But the MCE, however, insists that the GPHA engineers got it wrong. He gave the assurance that adequate steps have been taken to deal with any unforeseen development.
