President John Dramani Mahama has called for a major shift in Ghana’s anti-drug strategy, urging security agencies to prioritise the dismantling of large trafficking networks rather than focusing mainly on street-level peddlers.

Speaking at the #ResettingGhana Citizen’s Engagement in Tamale, the President said the current approach risks addressing only the visible aspects of the drug trade while leaving its root structures intact.

He stressed the need for a more intelligence-led and coordinated response that targets the organisers and financiers of illicit drug operations, describing them as the real drivers of the problem.

President Mahama noted that strengthening the capacity of security agencies to track and dismantle these networks is key to protecting communities and reducing the long-term impact of drug-related crimes across the country.

He added that a more strategic approach would ensure that enforcement efforts yield lasting results, rather than temporary disruptions at the lower levels of the drug chain.
