The Police have cautioned religious groups and leaders to be circumspect in communicating prophecies that could spark panic and controversy.

Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Alexander Obeng

In a statement Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Alexander Obeng reminded the public ahead of the December 31 Watch Night Services, which are known for delivering prophecies by Men of God, that religious freedom is subject to the laws of the country.

He noted that over the years, communication of prophecies of harm, danger and death, by some religious leaders, has created tension and panic in society and put the lives of many people in fear and danger.

In view of this, the Police has sent out a caution and reminder to the public, on what constitutes a crime, so far as prophecies are concerned.

”It is a crime for a person to publish or reproduce a statement, rumour or report which is likely to cause fear and alarm to the public or to disturb the public peace, where that person has no evidence to prove that the statement, rumour or report is true”.

The statement said a person found guilty under these laws could be liable to a term of imprisonment of up to five years.
