President John Dramani Mahama has announced that African passport holders travelling to Ghana for business or tourism will no longer pay visa fees when applying through the country’s newly introduced electronic visa platform.

The policy took effect immediately following the official launch of the e-visa platform on Monday, May 25, 2026, as part of government efforts to make travel easier across Africa and modernise Ghana’s immigration services.

Speaking at the launch, President Mahama said the new arrangement is intended to remove barriers to movement and encourage more business and tourism activity across the continent.

“Effective today, all holders of African passports travelling to Ghana for business or tourism will apply for visas via the new online e-visa platform, and they will pay no visa fee,” he announced.

According to the President, the e-visa system will allow travellers from around the world to complete visa applications online without visiting embassies or consulates.

Under the new process, applicants will be able to upload supporting documents electronically, make secure digital payments where required, and receive travel authorisation through email or mobile devices.

President Mahama explained that the introduction of the digital platform forms part of a broader government agenda to modernise immigration procedures and improve service delivery for international travellers.

He added that the initiative is also expected to strengthen Ghana’s position as an attractive destination for tourism, trade and investment while supporting greater movement across the African continent.

The new policy marks another step in Ghana’s efforts to promote regional integration and adopt technology-driven public services.
