The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Nutrition officer Kafui Odum, says there has been a sharp surge in anaemia cases among pregnant women in the Municipality.

In an interview with GBC News at Kpone, she noted that the rate at which pregnant women are diagnosed of anaemia is alarming in the Area.

She said 56 percent of pregnant women within the Municipality have been diagnosed of being anaemic; adding that the situation calls for an urgent attention.

Madam Odum explained said most pregnant women do not eat iron based food including plants and proteins which according to her are the main cause.

She attributed the rise in anemia cases to poverty explaining that most pregnant women do not have money to buy healthy food to consume.

Madam Odum said, during pregnancy the body undergoes numerous changes and there is the need to eat healthy and well balanced foods.

She advised pregnant women to eat healthy foods that are rich in iron; saying the Municipal Health Directorate will soon roll out the Micro-nutrient Product Campaign across the Municipality for children between six and 24 months.

The Campaign is aimed at encouraging pregnant women to supplement food they consume with more iron to help in their growth and that of their babies.
