Pastor Rex Nsiah Kusi, Head pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Awoshie-Accra, says Ash Wednesday is a reminder of human weakness, for which people, especially Christians, should draw closer to God. He said the day is also an opportunity for the church to seek spiritual growth.

“As we celebrate Ash Wednesday, our minds should go back to reflecting deeply on our weaknesses and the very need we should have for spiritual growth in the Lord so that especially Christians can focus well in progressing in our spirituality.”

Speaking in an interview with GBC NEWS on the significance of Ash Wednesday, Pastor Kusi, said this year’s Ash Wednesday holds a lot of importance for Christians as it falls on St. Valentine’s Day, which is a day set aside for the expression of love. He added that the love of God will come to his people in a special way this year even in the face of challenges.

“Since this year’s Ash Wednesday is coming on the same day as valentine. The love of God is really coming down to us in a very special way.”

Pastor Kusi encouraged all to love first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all other things will work for their good.

Ash Wednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days in the liturgical calendar. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting, which prepares Christians for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which redemption is attained.
