Several farms along the White Volta in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region have been submerged in excess water spilled from the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso.

The spill gates of the dam were opened last Monday.

Bawku West is the first area in northern Ghana to be hit this year by the devastating effects that come with the opening of the dam.

The large volumes of water from the dam are drifting further down and would hit other areas in the next few days.

Communities downstream the White Volta have over the years been at the receiving end anytime the Burkinabe authorities spill excess water from the Bagre Dam.

On August 5, NADMO issued a flood alert to a number of communities in northern Ghana, asking residents to evacuate to safe areas.

NADMO officials including its Director General and the Deputy Director General in charge of Operations have been in the Northern part of the country particularly the Upper East Region to help sensitise residents living and farming along the White Volta on the need to move to higher grounds.

All the District NADMO officials in the Upper East and North East Regions have been trained on the use of speed-boats, the handling of chain-saw machine and how to drain water from homes.

The Deputy Director In-charge of Operations, Abu Ramadan, has been speaking to Radio Ghana on the training exercise.

The Upper East Regional Director of NADMO, Jerry Asamane, revealed that his outfit has received relief items from central government.

The Ghana Red Cross Society, which  supports government institutions has been contributing its quota. The Upper East Regional Manager of the organization, Paul Wooma also spoke to Radio Ghana.
