Many people especially the poor continue to fall foul of the law and go to jail or suffer fines due to ignorance or their inability to uphold their rights and responsibilities.
It is for this reason and others that the Crime Check Foundation supported by the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) is to begin a project dubbed “Decriminalising Vagrancy Laws and Advocacy” (DVLA), to create an enabling environment for vagrants to know, claim and exercise their rights and responsibilities.
The project is expected to raise public awareness, monitor and engage on vagrancy laws.
In a statement signed by the Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation, Mr. Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, said the project will be implemented in 12 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions.
In line with the objective of the project, the CCF will undertake key activities in partnership with the media and participation of the MMDAs and other allied institutions in rights protection and justice delivery.
The Decriminalising Vagrancy Laws and Advocacy project will be launched by the CCF in Accra on May 28, 2021.
