Christendom today observed Palm Sunday, which signifies the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.  On this day, Christians carry palm branches and wave them in processions while singing praises. The occasion, which is also called ‘passion Sunday’ on the Christian calendar, is the first day of the Holy Week and the Sunday before Easter.

In Ghana, churches were filled by Congregants to mark the day. At the Holy Spirit Fire Centre of the Assembly of God, it was all green, as members of the church waved their palm fronds. The children were not left out as they also marched around the premises of the church singing praises and songs to depict what happened many years ago. Preaching the sermon, Rev Desmond Anderson encouraged the church to demonstrate forgiveness in order to draw closer and have a good relationship with God.

At the Grace Presbyterian Church, Westland, congregants came to church in their numbers with palm leaves to join in the celebration. The sermon focused on Jesus’ suffering on the cross. The preacher, Ebenezer Neequaye said like Jesus, Christians must show love and humility to fulfill God’s purpose in life.

At the Accra Newtown Presby Church, church members went on a procession through the streets. It was all joy as this is the first time since Covid 19 that the church has had the opportunity to mark the triumphant entry of Christ into Jerusalem. Led by the Church Brigade Band, the member, both young and old and adorned in Presbyterian attire, walked from the church’s premises through Raaco Down to the main Accra Newtown streets.

The normal long routes were cut short in order to avoid overcrowding.

In a sermon, the Second Minister of the Church, Rev. Kwame Owusu Banahene said no matter one’s current circumstances, when Christ is allowed into any situation, He turns things around as in the case of the donkey used for Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. He said this day should be seen as a victory for all Christians.
