Fishermen at the Labadi and Sakumono beaches are asking government to provide funds to help them support their families during the closed season.

According to them, if care is not taken, the  rate of crime could increase because many would not be able to fend for themselves and their families.

After weeks of registering their displeasure at government’s decision to begin the closed season, Fishers have reluctantly complied with the directive.

The move is aimed at saving some species like the mackerel and anchovies which are going extinct due to poor fishing practices and also to allow fingerlings to grow as well as ensure heavy catch upon resumption of fishing.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Fisheries Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, says  from the 1st of August to September 30, 2019 industrial trawlers will also observe the season.
