The Ghana Maritime Authority has set up a committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the sinking of a fishing vessel between the coast of Elmina and Takoradi.

This comes after the vessel sank at sea on Friday, May 6, 2022, when an attempt to haul a net with a bumper catch resulted in the vessel capsizing.

The incident led to the death of the captain of the fishing vessel with other sailors still missing.

Of the 26 crew members on board the vessel, 14 have been rescued, but 10 others, together with one observer from the Fisheries Commission, are yet to be found.

A statement issued by the Maritime Authority on the sinking of the Vessel said the Committee is also tasked to conduct a Marine Casualty Investigation by analysing the evidence available and determining the causal factors to draw conclusions relevant to the causal factors and make safety recommendations.

“We are continuing to engage all Fishing Vessel Operators and Personnel to abide by the rules guiding their trade to preserve life and property.”
