Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has been sworn in as 23rd Substantive IGP. Dr. Dampare, who is the 4th youngest IGP in the 4th Republic, succeeds James Oppong Boanuh who officially retired yesterday. President Akufo-Addo who administered the Oaths of office, Secrecy and Allegiance, charged Dr. Dampare, not to be an appendage of any political party.

Dr. Dampare who is the most Senior Police Officer after Oppong Boanuh who just retired was enlisted in 1990. He rose through the ranks occupying key positions in the Police Service until his elevation. President Akufo-Addo said the work of Dr. Dampare has been impressive since he took over in an Acting capacity, thereby making the decision to confirm him an easy one. The President assured the new IGP of resourcing the Police for effective discharge of their duties. He tasked the IGP to crack the whip without fear or favour.

“In a multi-party democracy, parties win and lose power. It is good for the health of the nation. This is why the police service under your leadership should not tie well-being or otherwise per the frontiers of the ruling party of the day. We need to cooperate to ensure the police service is left to focus on its core mandate” the President said.

Dr. Dampare promised to transform the Police and make it the most attractive institution in the country.

Our focus is to make sure that overs the years so soon into the future will become the most respected organization in the country and a reference point for Africa and beyond because we know that if we succeed in doing that, then at the end of the day we will get our respect and trust back as an institution,” the IGP said.

Present at the ceremony were the Vice-President, Dr Bawumia, Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Opare, Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, and Service Chiefs.
